The mission of the American Alpine Club (AAC) is to support scientific research in mountain and crag environments worldwide, contributing to our understanding of these ecosystems and landscapes integral to the climbing experience. Their goal includes improving the management of climbing environments and ensuring the climbing community's health and sustainability.
The AAC Research Grants program aims to support projects that enhance our understanding of the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climbing, mountaineering, and alpine ecosystems. Priority is given to research focused on two main areas: Climate Change, investigating its impacts on climbing landscapes and communities alongside policy guidance for mitigation and adaptation; and Public Land Management, addressing challenges due to increased outdoor climbing participation and providing policy or management solutions based on case studies. These projects are intended to contribute vital knowledge for the management and sustainability of climbing environments.
