The mission of the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is to initiate, encourage, and support research and public understanding of the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR aims to achieve its mission in a manner that is apolitical and without any religious affiliation.
ASOR's grant program aims to support archaeological research and exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean by providing funding grants and fellowships. Since 2007, it has contributed over $986,000 to support 740 researchers and students. These financial aids come in the form of scholarships for fieldwork participants, grants for archaeological projects, research fellowships, and scholarships for ASOR membership and annual meeting attendance. Specifically, the Joe D. Seger Project Grant, established in 2016, offers two $2,500 grants annually to support ASOR-affiliated excavation projects. This grant is intended to assist newer and smaller projects to get off the ground and support specific aspects of larger projects that can be completed with the grant funds. Additionally, it aims to help projects secure matching funds by covering particular needs.
