The mission of the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is to initiate, encourage, and support research and public understanding of the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR aims to achieve its mission in a manner that is apolitical and without any religious affiliation.
ASOR's grant program focuses on providing scholarships for fieldwork participation in Western Asia and the wider Mediterranean. In 2023, ASOR plans to award participation scholarships of $2,000 each to support individuals in participating as volunteers or staff on excavation projects. This effort also includes the Platt Scholarships, funded through the generosity of the late Mrs. Katherine Barton Platt, designated for ASOR members engaging in ASOR-affiliated archaeological projects. The goal is to enable participation in fieldwork, thereby supporting archaeological research and fostering a deeper understanding of historical and cultural legacies in the targeted regions.
