The mission of the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) is to initiate, encourage, and support research and public understanding of the history and cultures of the Near East and wider Mediterranean world, from the earliest times. ASOR aims to achieve its mission in a manner that is apolitical and without any religious affiliation.
ASOR focuses on providing funding grants and fellowships for individuals to participate in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since 2007, it has awarded over $986,000 to 740 researchers and students. This includes scholarships for fieldwork participants, grants for archaeological projects, research fellowships, and scholarships for membership and annual meetings. The Shepard Urgent Action Grants specifically aim to support emergency conservation or stabilization activities at archaeological sites in the greater Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, with a quick response time anticipated for applications, emphasizing the urgency of the supported activities. Preference is given to projects with a current ASOR affiliation, although all projects are considered, and non-affiliated teams may seek affiliation concurrently with their grant application.
