To promote the growth and development of plant biology, to encourage and publish research in plant biology, and to promote the interests, growth, and education of plant scientists in general.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) is designed to support promising undergraduate students by funding their research in plant biology early in their academic careers. Recipients of the SURF award are expected to present their research findings at the ASPB’s annual Plant Biology meeting the year following their fellowship award. Successful applicants receive a summer stipend of $6,000, ASPB membership, and $700 for research materials and supplies. Additionally, the fellowship provides travel support for students to attend and present their research at the Plant Biology 2024 conference in Honolulu, provided they complete specific engagement milestones such as registering for the meeting, promoting their project on social media or other platforms, and authoring an abstract to be presented as a poster at the conference.
