American Trails advances the development of diverse, high quality trails and greenways for the benefit of people and communities. This is achieved through collaboration, education, and communication, emphasizing the value of trail systems. American Trails envisions the nation’s public trails and greenways as accessible to all, connecting people with nature, improving quality of life, and boosting community economies through trail-based amenities.
The Trails Capacity Program focuses on enhancing the capacity of the trails community across the United States by maximizing funding for trail maintenance, research, and stewardship training projects. The program supports inclusive projects that foster improved trail user behavior and connect trail assets to a broader spectrum of users. Geared towards non-Forest Service Federal lands, State, local, and private lands, it aims to involve a variety of trail user groups, including both nonmotorized and motorized trail enthusiasts, as well as participants from the water trails community. Through collaborative efforts spearheaded by the Trails Move People Coalition and backed by American Trails, the Trail Fund aims to address critical needs such as the trail maintenance backlog on state and local lands, research to demonstrate trails' impact and benefits, and stewardship training to engage diverse populations in trail maintenance efforts. Initial funding includes a significant contribution from the Ford Corporation through the Bronco Wild Fund, underscoring a commitment to support quality trails nationwide.
