The mission of the funder is to advance the field of biophysics by supporting research and development in various scientific disciplines such as math, chemistry, physics, engineering, pharmacology, and materials sciences. This support aims to encourage the use of interdisciplinary skills to explore and develop new tools for understanding the mechanisms of life and the complex systems within our bodies.
The Biophysical Society offers awards, including the Carolyn Cohen Innovation Award, to recognize members who significantly contribute to advancing our fundamental understanding of biological systems. These contributions may involve the creation of novel theories, models, concepts, techniques, or applications in the field of biophysics. The award program aims to support and encourage the exploration and development of new tools for comprehending the workings of biology across all life forms. The Carolyn Cohen Innovation Award specifically provides an honorarium to a deserving BPS member for innovative achievements in biophysics. Award nominees and nominators must be members of the Society, although self-nominations are allowed for most categories except the Fellows distinction and the Outstanding Doctoral Research in Biophysics Award.
