The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation is dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote healthy living and improve the overall health of Kansans. By investing in programs that encourage healthy lifestyle choices among youth, the Foundation aims to reduce childhood obesity, reinforce positive mental health, and establish lifelong healthy habits, ultimately decreasing future health care costs in Kansas.
The Healthy Habits for Life Grants aim to support schools in their efforts to promote healthy lifestyle choices among kindergarten through grade 12 students. With $200,000 available in grants, these funds are designed to help implement programs that reduce cardiovascular risk, increase physical activity, teach healthy eating habits, and reinforce positive mental health. Eligible applicants include school nurses, physical education teachers, principals, health or family and consumer science teachers, and other administrators. The grant encourages a variety of creative and effective initiatives such as integrating folk dances into the curriculum, setting up school gardens or greenhouses, providing nutritional education, incorporating physical activities during recess, and hosting health-related family engagement nights, among others. These initiatives aim to leverage the school setting to positively influence students' health behaviors from an early age.
