The Brookdale National Group Respite Program has committed over three decades to support community-based organizations in developing high-quality, cost-effective dementia-specific social model day programs. This initiative aims to complement existing services for people with dementia, aiding them in remaining within their communities while also supporting caregivers. The program promotes the development of self-sustaining services that address dementia-related needs.
The Brookdale National Group Respite Program offers seed grants to service providers planning to initiate new, dementia-specific Group Respite or Early Memory Loss programming. Grantees receive a $20,000 grant in the first year, potentially renewable for $10,000 in the second year, contingent on the evaluation of the first year's activities and the program's potential for future sustainability. Additionally, the program provides ongoing technical assistance and support, including e-newsletters, telephone support, and integration into the BNGRP Network. This support extends to self-sufficient programs that continue to adhere to the dementia-specific models proposed by the Program. Programs aim to offer socialization and meaningful group activities for people with dementias, and respite for caregivers, with at least a day a week of operation. These initiatives are adapted to comply with COVID-19 safety measures and also facilitate access to other supportive services.
