The mission of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) is to conserve California native plants and their natural habitats, and increase understanding, appreciation, and horticultural use of native plants.

These scholarships target areas such as native plant or plant community conservation, plant ecology, plant community restoration, plant systematics, and the study of rare plants among other related botanical studies. Specific named scholarships, like the Sally Casey Shooting Stars Research Scholarship and the Don Mayall Conservation Research Scholarship, focus on research involving native wildflowers, grasslands, soil interactions, rare plants, and serpentine ecosystems.
