The National Sea Grant College Program, established by U.S. Congress in 1966 (and amended in 2020), aims to utilize the intellectual capacity of the nation’s universities and research institutions through federal and state partnerships to solve problems and generate opportunities in coastal communities.
The Kelp Recovery Research Program aims to accelerate and scale up kelp research and restoration in California, addressing the significant loss of kelp forests and their ecosystem services. This grant solicitation supports solutions-oriented projects guiding ecosystem-based management strategies for kelp in light of climate change, encompassing both research and restoration activities. Focused on filling knowledge gaps, informing a statewide Kelp Restoration and Management Plan, and promoting conservation through a "learn by doing" approach, the initiative encourages proposals that demonstrate potential to contribute to the recovery of California's kelp ecosystems and coastal communities. It prioritizes projects that build upon previous program outcomes, include meaningful partnerships (especially with Native American tribes and local groups), and align with strategic goals for coastal and marine biodiversity protection. Funding is available for projects up to 2 years, with a total of $5,000,000 allocated for selected projects and additional funds earmarked to support participation of underrepresented groups in marine sciences.
