Civil Society Grants: Increasing Access to Justice

Mott aims to improve transparency, accountability, and social and environmental standards at the international finance institutions that fund major energy and infrastructure projects. This involves working with the financial and environmental sectors globally to ensure projects protect the environment, deliver sustained benefits to communities, and respect the needs of nearby residents. The focus includes influencing the investment patterns of emerging economies, particularly those of Brazil and China.

    Overview

The grant program focuses on increasing access to justice as a means to promote social equity in communities. It believes that communities flourish when everyone has the ability to understand, use, and influence the laws of their society. The program's objectives are two-fold: Development and Expansion, aiming to build the capacity of community-based paralegal organizations in selected countries through grants supporting legal service delivery and advocacy efforts; and Networking and Learning, intended to foster regional and global learning, networking, and collaboration within the access to justice community. This includes supporting networks and research organizations that promote access to justice and ensuring the successful implementation of SDG 16.3. The foundation's grantmaking efforts will build upon its long-term work in South Africa and Ukraine, explore opportunities in additional African countries, and support regional and global efforts to advance access to justice on a community-based, grassroots level.
