CJI’s mission is to end mass criminalization and incarceration by building and strengthening the infrastructure of the grassroots criminal justice movement to fundamentally transform the U.S. criminal legal system. We fund where the movement is developing, shifting, and growing. We believe this movement should be led by those most impacted by the injustices of the current system, working in alliances across race, class, faith, gender, gender identity, sexuality, immigration status, and age.
The CJI Until She’s Free Fund is an innovative, participatory grantmaking initiative supporting women-led organizations addressing state-sanctioned violence against women and girls, including trans women and girls, and gender-nonconforming people, and their criminalization and subsequent incarceration. It aims to elevate leadership in bringing about foundational change, focusing on restoring or expanding the rights of those impacted by the criminal legal system. The fund supports grassroots organizing led by individuals directly affected by such systems, working to reimagine structures of accountability and secure safety while addressing harm. Funding priorities include ending the abuse-to-prison pipeline, abolishing immigrant detention and family separation, ending cash bail and sentencing reform, supporting reproductive justice, offering leadership training and opportunities, decriminalizing drug use, and transforming supervision systems for those with convictions. This initiative acknowledges the increased criminalization surrounding reproductive rights and seeks to protect communities facing heightened violence, including against Asian, Black, and Muslim women, as well as LGBTQI folx.
