Overview

The grant program is designed to recognize and support eligible trainees and students engaging in research that is of high scientific merit, as demonstrated through the submission of quality abstracts to an ASCO Meeting. Merit Awards offer recipients the chance to present their research at the Meeting, in addition to receiving monetary support, complimentary registration, and access to reserved hotel blocks. Special Merit Awards, including a plaque and further recognition, are given to First Authors of the top-ranking abstracts, with the Bradley Stuart Beller Endowed Merit Award offering $2,000 to the highest-ranking abstract in the Merit Award category.

Review Criteria

For the 2024 ASCO Annual Meeting Merit Awards, significant contributions have been made by benefactors with specific funding inclinations and limitations outlined as follows: support is directed toward research in various cancer types and related fields, including acute leukemia, the biology of cancer in the head and neck, breast cancer, developmental therapeutics, stages of drug development, endometrial cancer, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary cancer, oncology for the elderly, glioblastoma multiforme, gynecological cancers, lung cancer, aspects of medical education, melanoma, neuro-oncology, pancreatic cancer, pediatric oncology, prostate cancer, uncommon cancers, rare forms of renal cell carcinoma, studies incorporating real-world evidence or data, sarcoma, and research into the symptoms and survivorship.

Additional preferences specify supporting:

  • Researchers with a PharmD who are investigating acute leukemia, various cancers including those of the breast, gastrointestinal, and gynecologic types, alongside head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and melanoma.
  • Female researchers with projects focusing on liver cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, renal cell carcinoma, or uterine cancers.
  • Researchers belonging to groups that are underrepresented in the medical field (UIM).
  • Individuals conducting research from specific geographic locations: Florida, Maryland/Washington DC, and Northern California.
  • Researchers who hail from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
  • Studies aimed at the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or comprehensive management of cancer affecting patients within the LGBTQ+ community.

This setup reflects a diverse range of research interests and population focuses, demonstrating a broad commitment to advancing cancer research and treatment across varied demographics and cancer types.
