For over four decades, First Nations Development Institute has championed the economic empowerment of American Indian communities. It works to reinforce Native economies through the establishment of innovative institutions and models, aiming to enhance asset control and bolster economic development for American Indian individuals and their communities.
The Native Language Immersion Initiative aims to build the capacity of and support Native-controlled nonprofit organizations and tribal government programs actively advancing Native language immersion programs. Launched in 2017, this initiative supports the revitalization and perpetuation of Native languages as vital to maintaining the foundation through which traditions and values are passed down. It awards grants ranging from $45,000 to $75,000 for activities such as curriculum development, technology access, instructional courses and materials, mentorships, and teacher training to improve and enhance language immersion program capabilities. Since its inception, over 30 Native organizations and tribes have received more than $4 million in funding to bolster their language immersion efforts, establishing a community of practice among grantees and furthering support for Native language programs.
