The Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC) promotes, supports, and advocates for the effective delivery of quality adult and family literacy services in the state of Florida. It aims to assist adult education, literacy, and family literacy providers throughout Florida, with a special focus on aiding community-based literacy organizations in training and program development.
The Florida Health Literacy Initiative aims to improve health literacy among Floridians, particularly targeting individuals with below-basic levels of health understanding. This initiative, sponsored by the Florida Blue Foundation and managed by the Florida Literacy Coalition, provides training, resources, and funding for Florida adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and family literacy programs to incorporate health education into their curriculum. The goal is to enable learners to make informed health and nutrition decisions, directly tackling the challenges of health illiteracy among adults who did not complete high school and among the Hispanic population, who are at a higher risk of having low health literacy levels. The program, through various developed resources like "Staying Healthy: An English Learner’s Guide to Health Care and Healthy Living," aims to help over 16,000 students statewide. Grant awards support the integration of health education in literacy programs following a comprehensive approach that includes parent literacy instruction, interactive literacy activities between parents and their children, training for parents to be primary educators, and age-appropriate education for children.
