The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to sustain, enhance, protect and conserve Georgia's natural, historic and cultural resources for present and future generations, while recognizing the importance of promoting the development of commerce and industry that utilize sound environmental practices.
Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grants are designed to support a variety of recreational trail-related projects encompassing both motorized and non-motorized activities. These include hiking, biking, mountain biking, water trail use, equestrian activities, and various off-road vehicle uses. The program aims to enhance outdoor recreational opportunities by funding projects that are primarily recreational rather than utilitarian in nature. Types of projects supported include the construction of new trails, restoration of existing trails, leasing of trail construction and maintenance equipment, development of trailhead facilities, and acquisition of land or easements for trail purposes. Additionally, RTP dedicates a portion of funds to educational projects that promote safety and environmental protection on trails.
