The mission of the Great Lakes Fishery Trust is to enhance the sustainability, protection, and understanding of Great Lakes fishery resources in a way that benefits the environment, the economy, and the communities that rely on those resources. Through funding and strategic initiatives, they aim to foster environmental stewardship and ensure the long-term health of the Great Lakes fisheries.
The Access grant program is designed to increase access to the Great Lakes for shore-based angling and tribal fishing. It primarily funds capital improvement and renovation of existing access sites that are at or nearing the end of their lifecycle, as well as the development of new high-value sites that address gaps in access. Eligible sites include those on the Great Lakes or on tributaries below the lowermost barriers. The grant program focuses on projects within the state of Michigan, particularly in the Lake Michigan basin, though it is open to considering projects from throughout the state. Grants are offered biennially in even-numbered years.
