    Overview

The Charles Bullard fellowship program is designed to support advanced research and study by promising scholars and administrators in forestry and forest-related subjects, including a wide array of disciplines such as biology, earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts, or law. The program is highly competitive, accepting only 5 to 7 recipients annually from a large applicant pool. Research areas supported by the fellowship encompass forest ecology, tree physiology, soil biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, forest resource management, conservation, biodiversity, land use planning, and public policy, with occasional awards in the arts and environmental humanities—provided these proposals strongly connect to research at Harvard Forest. A major goal is to enhance research activities at Harvard Forest, fostering long-term collaborations that link Harvard Forest with other parts of Harvard University. Fellows may be based at Harvard Forest or associated with other departments and centers at Harvard University. The fellowship offers stipends up to $60,000, depending on the recipient's professional status, needs, and the duration of the Fellowship, which can range from 6 to 12 months. It aims not to fund original research significantly but to supplement income for individuals dedicating time to research, such as those on sabbatical leave, in federal public service training, or in educational leave in the private sector. The program is residential, requiring fellows to spend a substantial period based at either Harvard Forest or Harvard University, with varying resources and support available depending on the location.
