The mission of the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA) is to advance scientific knowledge and promote conservation of raptor populations through study and appreciation of raptor migration. HMANA supports this mission by providing services to the hawk watching community, which includes the online hawk watch information system HawkCount and the Raptor Population Index program.
The Hawk Watch Fund by HMANA aims to support the hawk watching community across North America, where many sites face challenges in securing funding for their counts. This fund offers grants aimed at helping sites that need support for various purposes such as educational materials, construction and maintenance of viewing platforms, hiring personnel, or purchasing necessary equipment. Grants range from $250 to $1000 and are awarded through a competitive application process. This process is judged annually by a committee appointed by HMANA. The program emphasizes volunteer-based projects that align with HMANA's overall goals and seeks to enhance the operation of hawk watches. Funding for these grants is amassed from HMANA’s annual Raptorthon and direct donations to the Hawk Watch Fund.
