Established in 2002, Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency (HUEE) aims to promote energy efficiency in the greater Kansas City area through education, resources, and actions. Its mission focuses on ensuring a secure energy future for residents by supporting initiatives that educate on or adopt energy efficiency measures, particularly within the residential sector.
The HUEE grant program prioritizes projects that enhance energy efficiency education and awareness, especially among low to moderate income families and in housing built before 1990. The grants support a variety of activities including the purchase and installation of energy-efficient devices (e.g., caulking, weather-stripping) and minor home repairs to improve energy conservation. Projects that provide general energy efficiency education, rather than promoting specific fuels or devices, are preferred. Grants range from $500 to $5,000, with the HUEE Board selecting projects that align closely with their goals and criteria, including the potential limitation of funding for labor or materials related to weatherizing homes as part of a larger program, with total costs not exceeding $5,000 per approved grant.
