Type of Support

Overview

The Heinz Endowments explicitly works to use the region of southwestern Pennsylvania as a laboratory to develop solutions to problems that are national and global in scope, and as a place to test and apply the best thinking in the world about solutions to complex social problems.

Goals and strategies for the three strategic areas that receive funding are as follows:

  • Creativity
    • Support cultural organizations to more effectively produce or present art
    • Ensure that individual artists can build careers and lives in the greater Pittsburgh region
    • Foster creative places by elevating the role of arts, culture, and high-quality design into regional development
    • Cultivate abundant opportunities for high-quality creative learning experiences
  • Learning
    • Foster equitable opportunities for all children and their families, especially those living in vulnerable neighborhoods
    • Focus on child and family well-being, holistic education and workforce readiness
  • Sustainability
    • Inclusive economy
    • Clean economy
    • Equitable development
    • Environment and public health
    • Food systems
    • Military veterans

  • Applicants must submit a "Share Your Idea" form prior to being invited to fill out a General Application.
  • It is the policy of The Heinz Endowments that "indirect/general overhead/administrative" cost assessments (i.e. those typically expressed as arbitrary "factors" or flat percentage cost add-ons) often applied to grant proposal budgets by large educational and/or research institutions are not acceptable and will not be included in the amount of any grants awarded.
