The mission of Horizons Foundation focuses on serving and addressing the needs and challenges of the LGBTQ community, particularly in the SF Bay Area. Through assessments and engagement, they aim to identify and tackle the disparities and vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQ individuals, emphasizing support for organizations that are community-based and LGBTQ-led. Their commitment includes a broad and inclusive approach to funding, prioritizing LGBTQ organizations and programs, especially those focusing on transgender individuals, LGBTQ people of color, bisexuals, youth, elders, as well as asylees and refugees, to achieve greater impact and support within the LGBTQ ecosystem.
The Community Issues Funding Program by Horizons Foundation is designed to adapt to the evolving needs and opportunities within the LGBTQ community, taking into account the significant challenges and disparities exacerbated by factors like the COVID-19 pandemic. The program upholds an "Open Door" policy, welcoming applications from all nonprofits and fiscally sponsored programs that align with their funding areas: Advocacy and Civil Rights, Arts and Culture, Community Building and Leadership, and Health and Human Services. In response to the increasing inequalities and based on their comprehensive LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment, the foundation prioritizes grants for organizations primarily focusing on or serving transgender individuals, LGBTQ people of color, bisexuals, LGBTQ youth under 24, LGBTQ elders over 55, and LGBTQ asylees/refugees. With an aim to increase the impact of their grants, Horizons offers awards up to $15,000 and has expanded the provision of multi-year grants.
