The HŌʻIHI Grant Program, overseen by the ONHR, embodies the goals of the NATIVE Act by fostering an inclusive national travel and tourism strategy that benefits Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs). It aims to address the challenges and pressures faced by Hawaiʻi’s natural and cultural resources due to the high volume of tourism, which has been both a significant economic driver and a source of cultural and environmental strain. The program seeks to transform tourism into a regenerative industry that sustains and restores Hawaiʻi's resources—both natural and human. By supporting NHOs, the grant program promotes heritage and cultural tourism initiatives that involve the Native Hawaiian Community in a way that is self-determining and beneficial to their economic and cultural preservation.
