The mission of the Kansas Volunteer Commission, a program of the Kansas State Department of Education, is focused on supporting civic engagement activities among youth in grades K-12. This initiative aims to increase academic performance, improve social-emotional well-being, build safer and more inclusive communities, reduce dropout rates, and promote a habit of civic participation that can yield long-term benefits for both individuals and communities.
The Youth Civic Engagement Mini-Grant aims to support a variety of projects that engage young people in civic activities and decision-making, with a goal of fostering a more just and equitable society. This grant program seeks to address opportunity gaps and inequities by promoting youth participation in civic and political life, particularly for underrepresented groups. Projects can range from developing service-learning activities, supporting youth in advisory roles, creating opportunities for underrepresented youth voices, encouraging governance shadowing projects, to facilitating youth participation in public meetings. With up to $30,000 in grants available, the Kansas Volunteer Commission expects to award up to $5,000 per eligible entity for nonpartisan projects that encourage an informed democracy.
