The Lots of Compassion grant program is aimed at supporting community leaders in their efforts to convert vacant lots into gardens, with the goal of fostering compassion within communities. Recognizing that around 15% of land in urban areas is vacant or abandoned, leading to numerous negative consequences for the surrounding neighborhoods, this program seeks to address these challenges by turning such spaces into areas of growth and positivity. The grant prioritizes projects that demonstrate a clear need and potential for significant impact, emphasizing support for under-resourced organizations or communities facing systemic denials of necessary resources. The initiative particularly values projects that might not have access to consistent funding or support, are situated within socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, and have the potential to significantly enhance learning and engagement opportunities for a large number of participants. In its current cycle, the program will award 10 grants of $20,000 each, totaling $200,000 in annual funding, to assist in transforming vacant lots into productive and beneficial garden spaces.
