The goal of LEF New England is to fund the work of independent documentary film and video artists in the region, broadening recognition and support for their work locally and nationally. It supports programs that emphasize the rich history and ongoing legacy of innovation within New England’s independent film community, aiming to build a sustainable and strong community of support for artists and their work.
The Moving Image Fund (MIF) by LEF New England supports independent filmmakers by providing funding across all production phases, from initial risk-taking through completion. Launched in 2001, the MIF offers a continuum of support for selected projects and seeks to identify new talent. The fund focuses on projects that are provocative, heartfelt, and challenging in both style and substance, having supported over 300 projects with approximately $4 million in funding. Grants are awarded based on quality of cinematic form and technique, originality of vision, resonance of the core idea or story, and production feasibility. Specifically, up to seven grants of $15,000 each are offered for production funding, covering costs like shooting, early-stage editing, and equipment. For post-production, up to four grants of $25,000 each support editing, rights acquisition, and distribution strategy. Previous LEF support is required for post-production funding eligibility.
