The Mind & Life Institute is dedicated to alleviating global crises of disconnection such as loneliness, isolation, and racism by understanding the role of the human mind in both creating and solving these issues. The Institute focuses on the transformation of minds toward interconnection and positive action in the world, leading initiatives that support individual well-being, societal flourishing, and a human-earth connection through research on contemplative practices and their impact on the mind.
The PEACE Grants program by the Mind & Life Institute supports projects that enhance understanding of Prosociality, Empathy, Altruism, Compassion, and Ethics (PEACE) qualities. The goal is to foster research on practices, methods, or interventions cultivating these qualities, understand their underlying mechanisms, and develop rigorous measures for assessment. The grants encourage interdisciplinary research that can lead to positive world actions, focusing on personal well-being, compassionate communities, and the human-earth connection. Projects should explore contemplative approaches’ role in promoting PEACE qualities, with a special interest in proposals that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries with methodologically rigorous approaches. Two levels of funding are provided, requiring completed research within a 2-year period and annual progress reporting.
