Monument Lab envisions a society where monuments are dynamic, reflecting their meaning rather than a fixed, untouchable status. By engaging with artists, organizations, and movements, and disrupting the monument creation and interpretation status quo, the organization aims for a future defined by joy, regeneration, and repair. This vision is underpinned by values that emphasize art, process, intersectionality, collaboration, integrity, care, citation, and learning, all aimed at dismantling oppression in all its forms for a truly free society.
Monument Lab's Re:Generation initiative, supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, provides $100,000 in unrestricted funding to teams working on public art, history, or humanities projects that aim to creatively represent and interpret erased, suppressed, or threatened stories and histories. The initiative seeks to support grassroots artists, educators, organizers, and memory collectives in shifting local and regional narratives that may foster broader transformations in the commemorative landscape. Selected projects should be deeply rooted in local communities and developed with an awareness of the unique local conditions and support networks. Re:Generation aims to build a cohort of diverse teams that will collaborate and engage in public dialogues, contributing to a wider campaign to reimagine monuments and the stories they tell.
