NBI is a partnership between conservation organizations, educational institutions, government agencies, and individuals committed to conserving the native biodiversity of Nantucket through collaborative research, monitoring, and education.
The NBI Small Research Grants Program aims to support research projects that enhance understanding of biodiversity on Nantucket, Tuckernuck, Muskeget, and surrounding waters. In 2023, the program will focus on two research categories: General Biodiversity Research, targeting projects that expand knowledge of lesser-studied taxonomic groups and the islands' overall biodiversity, and Climate Change and Island Resilience Research, focusing on the interplay between biodiversity and climate change on the islands. Priority will be given to projects that advance NBI's mission, involve the islands as key research sites for broader biodiversity studies, focus on understudied taxonomic groups, include multiple species, or propose novel research not previously conducted on the islands. Grants up to $1,500 may cover research activities and reasonable travel expenses, with potential for in-kind support like housing, transportation to field sites, lab space, and field equipment from NBI organizations.
