The mission of Step Into Swim™ is to create more swimmers by investing in the next generation through learn-to-swim programs in underserved communities. They focus on instilling confidence, empowering participation in water activities, advocating for the benefits of water play, and promoting safe practices around water.
The Step Into Swim initiative grants funds to swim programs to support the provision of swim lessons, especially targeting children who might not otherwise afford them. They partner with various organizations, such as the American Red Cross, state parks, and YMCAs, aiming to prepare young children to be safer around water, positively impact their community, combat childhood obesity through increased health and recreational opportunities, and teach swimming in a progressive manner to develop lifelong skills. The grant's purpose is restricted to expenditures relevant to offering a quality multi-level learn-to-swim program. The program objectives include teaching water safety, promoting health and fitness, setting and achieving goals, and enhancing the grantees' aquatic programs by reaching children who normally would not take swim lessons. The grant period is for one year, and participants are expected to learn key swimming skills and safety rules by the end of the program.
