The humanities are seen as our best hope for building a better future, breaking free from individual limitations and understanding various perspectives and social forces. They emphasize making history relevant and encouraging reflection on the shared human experience, moving beyond formal education into the public sphere. Public humanities programming, associated with areas like history, values, cultures, and beliefs, aims to make critical thinking and reflection accessible to diverse audiences.
Incubation Grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities are designed to support the planning and development of public humanities projects directed at New Jersey-based audiences. These grants encourage applicants to explore bold ideas that could lead to new or deeper partnerships, broaden research topics or perspectives, engage community stakeholders, and expand audience understanding. The program supports both new initiatives and the reimagining of existing programs, placing a strong emphasis on the thoughtful preparation of projects before they are implemented. Eligible projects might include the creation of reinterpretation plans for historic sites, development of community archives or oral history projects, outreach and assessment for humanities-based programming, preliminary research for artistic works, and the planning and development of discussions, exhibitions, and more. The Incubation Grants underline the importance of discovery in the humanities, favoring proposals with a significant planning or developmental aspect over those focused on immediate execution.
