The NWT Literacy Council is committed to promoting and supporting literacy and essential skills in all official languages of the Northwest Territories. Their mission encompasses enhancing Indigenous languages, family literacy, adult literacy and essential skills, youth literacy, and plain language. They focus on empowering individuals, families, communities, and various sectors to participate actively in social, economic, and political life through improved literacy and essential skills.
The Skill Builders for Youth Funding program focuses on teaching Essential Skills to at-risk youth. Essential Skills are regarded as crucial for learning, work, and life, enabling individuals to function and thrive within their communities and workplaces. This grant aims to equip at-risk youth with these necessary skills to enhance their personal and professional development.
