The OWSD early career fellowship, administered by OWSD with funds from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, aims to empower women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from Science and Technology Lagging Countries (STLCs). Their mission focuses on supporting women to lead significant research projects, enhance their leadership and business skills, and foster a global network of women in STEM that provides mentorship for the next generation of female leaders.
The OWSD Early Career Fellowship offers up to USD 50,000 to women who have completed their PhDs in STEM subjects and are employed at an academic or scientific research institution in STLCs. The fellowship's broad goals are to help fellows establish research environments of international standards, encourage scholars worldwide to collaborate, and maintain scientific excellence in their home countries. Specific objectives include fostering research projects with practical applications for low and middle-income countries, building leadership and business skills for research dissemination and career advancement, and consolidating a network of outstanding women scientists for mentorship. The fellowship support, lasting for two years, aims to allow fellows to focus on research by covering costs not directly related to their projects, aspiring to develop centers of specialist research recognized on various levels, thereby attracting internationally recognized researchers.
