The Russell Sage Foundation is dedicated to the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States. It supports innovative research on social, political, and economic inequalities and aims to enhance the understanding and mitigation of factors contributing to inequalities. The foundation fosters projects exploring the distribution of outcomes across various groups and encourages methodological diversity and interdisciplinary collaboration in research.
The foundation's program on Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration encourages innovative investigator-initiated research into the roles of race, ethnicity, nativity, and legal status—and their interactions—in affecting the outcomes of immigrants, minorities, and whites in the U.S. It prioritizes original data collection for projects focused on significant program priorities, including survey or field experiments and qualitative studies. Projects must have robust conceptual frameworks and rigorous research designs, addressing questions related to racial and ethnic diversity, intergroup relations, social inclusion, immigration policy, immigrant integration policies, the role of legal status in immigrant outcomes, social movements and responses to diversity, the politics of racial and ethnic competition and coalition-building, criminal and civil justice in law enforcement, and the historical interplay of race, immigration, and law. Funding options include Trustee Grants up to $200,000 and Presidential Awards up to $75,000 for projects with special data gathering needs, without indirect costs.
