The Community Focus Grant program collaborates with Field of Interest and donor-designated funds to tackle specific community challenges. It provides funding primarily for the Robert H. Janssen Youth and Youth Sports Fund. This fund, established through the generosity of the Robert H. Janssen Foundation, supports local nonprofit organizations that offer youth enrichment and youth sports programs in the City of San Luis Obispo (SLO) and the adjacent area within San Luis Obispo County. The grant aims to enrich the lives of local youth in line with the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets. It honors Mr. Janssen’s dedication to youth sports and community activities in SLO County, emphasizing the importance of team activities and positive adult mentorship. Funding is intended to cover only a portion of program costs, with a focus on direct service costs, and gives preference to youth sports programs accessible to all community segments regardless of income. It also supports youth enrichment activities, prioritizing active participation over educational programming.
