The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP), Division 2 of the American Psychological Association, is committed to supporting and enhancing the teaching of psychology. They aim to encourage educational excellence, foster an inclusive and equitable academic environment, and promote the professional development of psychology educators. They are also focused on addressing systemic racism and inequity within their scope, advocating for diversity and inclusion in the field.
The STP awards program is designed to honor excellence in psychology teaching across various educational levels, including high school, 2-year, and 4-year colleges or universities. It specifically recognizes outstanding performance through teaching awards of $1500 and a plaque in six categories, among which includes the Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence Award for early career psychologists. This program emphasizes effective teaching, mentoring student professional development, advancing teaching and learning through scholarship and service, and training educators. By aligning with criteria that underscore the importance of capable instruction, engaging students in psychology, and adhering to high educational standards, the awards program aims to foster a community of dedicated and innovative psychology teachers. Special consideration is given to applicants from underrepresented groups, in line with STP's mission to promote diversity and inclusivity in psychology education.
