Southern SARE's mission emphasizes the importance of sustainable agriculture. Through funding and supporting on-farm research, Southern SARE aims to solve agricultural production problems by encouraging practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound, socially responsible, and that improve the quality of life for farmers, communities, and society as a whole.
Professional Development Program Grants aim to further education and outreach for agricultural professionals and educators working with farmers and ranchers. These grants support training activities like seminars, workshops, farm tours, and the development and dissemination of training materials. They encourage projects that use a systems approach to sustainable agriculture, focusing on environmental, societal, and economic impacts. The grants advocate for participatory training methods, multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional partnerships, involvement of farmers in training planning and evaluation, and the use of diverse and internet-ready formats for training materials. Activities may be conducted within a single state, across multiple states, or throughout the Southern region, emphasizing collaborations with both 1862 and 1890 land-grant institutions.
