For over six decades, the Tinker Foundation has promoted economic and social development in Latin America. It realizes its mission by funding civil society organizations, including nonprofits, research institutes, and universities, that work on the region's most pressing challenges. These organizations use Tinker resources to test ideas, expand proven models, and foster new problem-solving collaborations. Tinker emphasizes the importance of knowledge and approach exchange within and beyond Latin America, supporting comparative and collaborative work.
The Tinker Foundation’s Institutional Grants program aims to support changes in policy and practice that improve the lives of Latin Americans, focusing on three key areas: Democratic Governance, Education, and Sustainable Resource Management. Specifically, under the Education strand, the Foundation has responded to the educational disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which drastically increased learning poverty and affected millions of students in the region, especially the most vulnerable. Over the past two years, Tinker has awarded grants totaling over $3 million to more than 30 organizations working to mitigate the pandemic's impact on education across Latin America. The funding priorities for 2022 include projects that promote foundational learning recovery, secure student re-enrollment and retention, and evolve curricula and teaching approaches to increase educational equity and quality. The Foundation is open to supporting projects at different stages of implementation, offering grants ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 per year for up to two years, with potential consideration for projects up to three years in exceptional cases focusing on securing longer-term changes.
