Overview

This grant program aims to support the operations of Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) within the parameters established in the Historic Preservation Fund Grants Manual. It is designed to ensure THPO activities such as the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic properties comply with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Key activities funded include surveying, planning, technical assistance, physical preservation, reviewing Federal undertakings, education, and listing in the National Register of Historic Places and Tribal Registers. The grants are intended to assist THPOs in fulfilling historic preservation responsibilities assumed from State Historic Preservation Offices on tribal lands, in accordance with their partnership agreements with the National Park Service and must adhere to the stipulations outlined in 54 USC 3001 et seq.
