PHMSA's mission is to protect people and the environment by advancing the safe transportation of energy and other hazardous materials that are essential to our daily lives.
The Competitive Academic Agreement Program (CAAP) is designed to fund research that seeks innovative solutions in the realm of pipeline safety and integrity, focusing on four main challenge areas. The grant program, especially for its 2024 cycle, emphasizes advancing equity by promoting the involvement of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in its research activities. Additionally, it aims to incorporate equity considerations into its research themes, such as enhancing the safe transportation of hydrogen to combat climate change and reducing risks to socially vulnerable communities caused by deteriorating cast iron pipelines.
