The Office of the Secretary (OST) oversees the formulation of national transportation policy and promotes intermodal transportation.
The INFRA Grants program encompasses three distinct grant programs: the National Infrastructure Project Assistance grants program (Mega), the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects grants program (INFRA), and the Rural Surface Transportation Grant program (Rural). These programs are competitive and aim to fund significant surface transportation infrastructure projects across the United States. Projects may include highway and bridge construction, intercity passenger rail development, wildlife crossings, public transportation enhancements, and freight infrastructure improvements, catering both to national or regional needs and rural infrastructure expansion. The primary objective is to invest in projects that not only lead to infrastructure improvements but also align with strategic goals such as enhancing safety, supporting economic strength and global competitiveness, advancing equality, and promoting environmental sustainability.
