The mission of FHWA is to deliver a world-class system that advances safe, efficient, equitable, and sustainable mobility choices for all while strengthening the Nation’s economy.
The grant program supports eligible projects geared towards enhancing transportation safety on public roads which align with transportation safety plans. It particularly emphasizes the correction or improvement of hazardous road locations or features, and the addressing of highway safety issues. It stresses the importance of strategic planning based on data to locate and remediate safety needs within Tribal communities. The grant outlines four eligibility categories including transportation safety plans, data assessment/improvement/analysis activities, systemic roadway departure countermeasures, and infrastructure improvements among other activities specified in 23 U.S.C. § 148(a)(4).
