The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office)'s mission is to advance the practice of community policing by state, local, territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies through information and grant resources. This mission is aligned with its role within the U.S. Department of Justice to support law enforcement agencies in building stronger community relationships and enhancing public safety.
The COPS Hiring Program (CHP) targets the enhancement of community policing efforts by providing funding for the hiring and/or rehiring of additional career law enforcement officers. This initiative seeks to bolster community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. The program emphasizes the recruitment of officers to engage in community partnerships, problem analysis and assessment, and the implementation of strategies for personnel and agency management that support community policing philosophies. Through these efforts, the grant aims to improve public safety by addressing issues such as violent and nonviolent crime and community fear of crime, fostering a proactive and collaborative approach to law enforcement.
