The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.
The Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions aims to support small-scale research projects at institutions that receive limited funding from the NIH. This initiative focuses on enabling biomedical research opportunities primarily for undergraduate students and aims to strengthen the research environment at these institutions. To be eligible, institutions must confer baccalaureate science degrees and have received less than 6 million dollars annually from NIH in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years.
