The grant program aims to support pilot and/or feasibility research focused on preventing or delaying the initiation of substance use, as well as preventing the progression from substance use to misuse or disorder. It includes development and pilot testing of new or adapted interventions, along with pre-trial feasibility and acceptability testing of services and service system research relevant to substance use prevention. The grant also seeks to address outcomes related to reducing negative consequences associated with substance misuse, such as deaths from impaired driving, suicidal behavior, and the drug- or alcohol-related transmission of HIV infection and viral hepatitis across various populations and settings.
