The Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs leads Department efforts to expand and strengthen the relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other countries.
PDS Sofia is dedicated to strengthening the people-to-people ties between the United States and Bulgaria through cultural and exchange programming. These initiatives are aimed at highlighting shared values and promoting bilateral cooperation. All programs must encompass an American cultural element, or involve collaboration with American experts, organizations, or institutions, to foster a deeper understanding of U.S. policies, perspectives, and shared values. Competitive proposals should address priority themes such as promoting leadership, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and innovation among students; deepening social, cultural, and educational connections; supporting Bulgaria’s NATO membership; developing youth skills in STEAM; strengthening independent media and civil society; enhancing media and digital literacy; advancing the inclusion of underserved communities; increasing regional interconnectivity; and promoting environmental sustainability and energy diversification.
