Type of Support

Overview

The Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program in Connecticut provides technical and financial assistance to local communities to address imminent threats to life and property caused by natural disasters in watersheds. These threats may include floods, fires, windstorms, among other natural calamities. Importantly, the program can be activated without a formal disaster declaration by federal or state authorities. It focuses on a range of activities including debris removal from water channels, streambank restoration, drainage facility repair, establishment of vegetative cover on eroded lands, levee and structure repair, and the repair of specific conservation practices. Additionally, the program emphasizes the acquisition of floodplain easements. Projects must be sponsored locally and demonstrate economic, environmental, and social viability while adhering to appropriate engineering standards.
