IL Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP): Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE)

From USDA: Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)

We deliver conservation solutions so agricultural producers can protect natural resources and feed a growing world.

    Type of Support

    Overview

Wetlands Reserve Easements (WRE) aim to support private and tribal landowners in the protection, restoration, and enhancement of wetlands that have been degraded, particularly by agricultural activities. The program focuses on a variety of environmental and community benefits, including providing habitats for wildlife, improving water quality, reducing flooding, recharging groundwater, protecting biodiversity, supporting climate change resilience, and facilitating educational, scientific, and limited recreational activities. It involves NRCS entering into purchase agreements with eligible landowners or Indian tribes, encompassing the development and implementation of a Wetland Reserve Plan of Operations (WRPO) to restore, protect, and enhance wetland functions and values.
