    Type of Support

    Overview

The Healthy Forests Reserve Program (HFRP) is designed to assist landowners in restoring, enhancing, and protecting forestland resources on private lands through easements and financial assistance. The program aims to support the recovery of endangered or threatened species, improve plant and animal biodiversity, and enhance carbon sequestration. HFRP offers 10-year restoration agreements and 30-year or permanent easements to landowners for undertaking specific conservation actions. For American Indian tribe-owned acreage, a 30-year contract option is available. Moreover, some landowners participating in the program may navigate around regulatory restrictions under the Endangered Species Act by dedicating their land to habitat restoration or improvements for a set period. To be eligible, applicants must prove ownership or, if tenants, obtain written approval from the landowner for the duration of the HFRP restoration agreement. Eligible lands must be privately owned or owned by Indian tribes and must aim to restore, enhance, or significantly contribute to the recovery of threatened or endangered species, improve biological diversity, or increase carbon storage.
